Netflix, OCS, Disney + … What are the most anticipated series in 2020 on SVoD sites?

This year will be marked by the arrival of the first series signed Shonda Rhimes on Netflix and by the launch of Disney + in France.

The year 2019 offered us very high quality series such as Watchmen, Euphoria, Chernobyl (available on OCS), but also Sex Education, unbelievable (on Netflix), Years and Years (on Canal + Séries), The boys (on Amazon Prime Video) or The Morning Show (on Apple TV +). But what does this year 2020 have in store for us? If we will surely have lots of good surprises throughout the year, some titles have already been announced. Here are the series available on the video on demand subscription (SVoD) platforms that we think are the most promising.

On Netflix

What does it talk about ? While the Earth is nothing more than a continent of ice, the last 3,000 survivors took place aboard the Snowpiercer, a huge train which travels the planet without ever stopping. In this dreaded device, a new society has been organized where inequalities are legion.

Why are we waiting for him? Because this project, adapted from the film Snowpiercer, the Transperceneige from the Korean Bong Joon-ho, himself drawn from the trilogy of eponymous comic books signed by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette (ed. Casterman), has been rejected so many times that it almost never saw the light of day. Broadcast in the United States on TNT, the series, led by Jennifer Connelly (An exceptional man, Requiem For a Dream) and rapper Daveed Diggs will be available in France on Netflix in the spring.

What does it talk about ? According to its creator, cited by The Hollywood Reporter (article in English), this series is “a love letter to Mecca in American cinema from the 1940s”.

Why are we waiting for him? After The Politician, whose rather successful first season went live on Netflix in 2019 (and which will also be back this year), Hollywood is the second project developed by Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip / Tuck …) for the world leader in SVoD. Still shooting, this dramatic mini-series should still be launched during the month of May. Around Darren Criss (American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace), we find in the cast other regulars of the producer, like Dylan McDermott (American horror story), Patti LuPone (pose) or Holland Taylor, Sarah Paulson's partner. The latter will be showing Ratched, another Murphy production for Netflix expected this fall and presented as a prequel to the film by Milos Forman Flight over a cuckoo's nest, centered on the character of nurse Mildred Ratched (who presented Oscar to actress Louise Fletcher in 1976).

What does it talk about ? A journalist (Anna Chlumsky alias Amy Brookheimer in Veep) decides to investigate the Anna Delvey case (Julia Garner, seen in Ozark). This true story that recently hit the headlines tells how a young Russian woman pretended to be a German heiress in order to seduce and defraud the New York elite before being arrested and convicted in 2019.

Why are we waiting for him? Like Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy) is one of those author-producers who signed a juicy exclusivity contract with Netflix. Outraged Bridgertons, series in costumes also expected this year that Rhimes produces, Inventing Anna is the first creation of the American since its series Scandal. Besides Anna Chlumsky, we find among the title roles Katie Lowes (Scandal) and Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black).

Leïla Bekhti (on the left) and Tahar Rahim in the series “The Eddy”. (ROGER DO MINH)

What does it talk about ? The daily life of a Parisian jazz club on the brink of bankruptcy, run by Elliot Udo (André Holland de Moonlight), an immature New York pianist.

Why are we waiting for him? Because it is the first series of the director Damien Chazelle, multi Oscar winner for La La Land and Whiplash, that it is a Franco-American co-production in which we will find Leïla Bekhti and (her husband in the city) Tahar Rahim, reunited ten years later The Prophet by Jacques Audiard, and that the music has been entrusted to Glenn Ballard, the producer behind the albums Bad and Dangerous by Michael Jackson.

About OCS

Winona Ryder in the series

What does it talk about ? What if Franklin Delano Roosevelt had not been re-elected in 1941? What if aviator Charles Lindbergh, sympathizer of the Nazi regime, had become president of the United States in his place? It is with this premise that the American novelist Philip Roth, who grew up in a Jewish family in New Jersey, reinvents his childhood in The Plot against America, his uchronic novel published in 2004.

Why are we waiting for him? If you cheered with both hands the return of Winona Ryder in the series Stranger things, you must be impatient to discover the actress in this new project under the direction of showrunners David Simon and Ed Burns. The duo were already in command of the now cult series The Wire (Bugged in VF). A political mini-series which will undoubtedly be one of the events of the year.

What does it talk about ? Ruby and Billy are two former lovers who made a pact fifteen years earlier. If, one day, one of them sends the other by text “Run” (“Cours” in French), the latter must drop everything to join him and so that they run away together.

Why are we waiting for him? The answer lies in one name: Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The creator of Fleabag, also at the controls of Killing Eve and co-writer on Dying can wait, the next James Bond (in theaters on April 8) is THE creator that we are struggling for. Recently rewarded at the Golden Globes and the Emmy Awards, the 30-year-old returns with a romantic comedy with thriller overtones worn by the brilliant Merritt Wever (unbelievable, Nurse Jackie), but also Domhnall Gleeson (General Armitage Hux in the last trilogy of Star Wars), and in which it will also have a small role. In the United States, the series will be broadcast on HBO Max.

What does it talk about ? Grace Reinhart Sachs (Nicole Kidman) is a famous therapist specializing in marital problems. But the day her husband (Hugh Grant) passes out in the wild, all his certainties collapse.

Why are we waiting for him? After Big Little Lies, Nicole Kidman finds designer David E. Kelley for a mini-series from the new You Should Have Known (First Impressions, in the editions I read) of the American novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz. Besides Hugh Grant, Nicole Kidman (who is also executive co-producer of the series) will also be surrounded by the always brilliant Donald Sutherland.

What does it talk about ? In racist America of the 1950s, Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors, seen in When We Rise), a young black man, embarks on a road trip in search of his father, accompanied in his quest by his childhood friend, Laetitia (Jurnee Diana Smollett-Bell aka Nicole in True blood) and his uncle George, a great lover of science fiction. But this trip to the land of the Ku Klux Klan will prove to be even more frightening than expected.

Why are we waiting for him? After Weird city (available on YouTube Premium) and his reboot of The Fourth Dimension, the director Jordan Peele is working on a new series for HBO adapted from a short story by the American writer Matt Ruff. Produced by Bad Robot Productions, the J.J. Abrams box, Lovecraft Country looks like a horrific series so Get out.

On Amazon Prime Video

What does it talk about ? 1977, New York. Led by Meyer Offerman (Al Pacino), the Hunters are a group of somewhat special hunters. They track down former high officials of the Nazi regime exiled to the United States whom they suspect of plotting to establish a Fourth Reich in the country and launch a new genocide.

Why are we waiting for him? Because the uchronie-Nazis-Al Pacino combo produced by Jordan Peele (decidedly very active on the TV series side) can only work.

On Disney +

What does it talk about ? Since the fall of the Empire, it is no longer good to be a bounty hunter as contracts are becoming scarce. Forced to accept an unofficial proposal, the most formidable of them, The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is responsible for finding and bringing back to his sponsors a child of the same people as Yoda.

Why are we waiting for him? First series derived from the universe Star Wars (chronologically, it takes place between Return of the Jedi and The force awakens) The Mandalorian is also the first series produced for the SVoD Disney + service, launched in a few countries last November. In France, his arrival is scheduled for May 31. The opportunity for those who have not given in to the sirens of piracy, and who have cracked before the images of Baby Yoda, to legally discover the series.

What does it talk about ? We do not know precisely, except that the series will revolve around the two acolytes of Captain America, Bucky and Faucon, at work in Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.

Why are we waiting for him? Because The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is one of two new series developed by Marvel Studios that Disney + should launch in 2020 with Wandavision (qwhich should focus on the adventures of the Red Witch and the Android in the 1950s). Proof that the series will be a continuation of the last events related in Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Emily VanCamp will take on the roles of Sam Wilson alias Le Faucon, James Barnes alias Bucky and Sharon Carter alias Agent 13 respectively. Disney + …

Other attractive series will also be launched this year in the United States, in particular on the Hulu platform (which is partly owned by Disney, but which is independent of Disney +). There is a good chance that they will also be distributed in France, but we don't know when or on which SVoD service. Watch out however Little Fires Everywhere (from March 18 on Hulu), a mini-series piloted by Reese Witherspoon with herself and Kerry Washington, and Nine Perfect Strangers, another series adapted by David E. Kelley with Nicole Kidman.

Another highly anticipated miniseries, Mrs. America. The true story of Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative activist camped out by Cate Blanchett, who campaigned in the 1970s against equal rights for men and women, and against abortion. Produced by FX, Mrs. America will be broadcast on Hulu, which will become the channel’s SVoD service from March. This is also the case for Y: the last man, the serial adaptation of the comic book of SF by Brian K. Vaughan, expected this year on the platform.
