George Floyd’s homicide in Minneapolis has been widely commented on in France and many figures have been drawn, often to “put things in perspective” in the United States. On CNews, columnist Eric Zemmour claims that 80% of whites are killed by blacks (…) And concerning the number of homicides caused by the police, he adds that it is false to say that the American agents mainly kill the blacks.
80% of white victims killed by blacks in the United States? This is also claimed by many far-right websites as well as former RN Aymeric Chauprade MEP, which incorrectly claims that these are 2018 data. In reality, in 2018, 15.5% of whites were killed by blacks in the United States. Five times less than what these commentators claim. And 81% of whites were killed by whites.
Furthermore, it is true that in absolute terms, as Eric Zemmour says, slightly more whites die in police interventions than blacks, but this is simply because African-Americans represent only 13% of the American population. According to a study using statistics conducted over five years, an African-American is 2.5 times more likely to die at the hands of the police than a white man.
These erroneous figures actually date from 2015. They were then just as false, but had circulated widely. Donald Trump even tweeted them. Five years later, nothing helps.
